A classroom was named after the late Professor Emeritus Jae-seok Choi, a leading sociologist in the fields of the history of Korean sociology and the history of ancient Korea-Japan relations.

At the signboard hanging ceremony held at 12 pm on April 12, of the KU College of Liberal Arts building, room 307 was named the Jae-seok Choi & Choon-gye Lee Classroom.

Mrs. Choon-gye Lee (age 87), the wife of the late Professor Emeritus Choi (Department of Sociology) who passed away in October 2016 at the age of 90, donated an apartment in the Gangnam district, which she inherited from her late husband, to Korea University in February, as was written in her husband’s will.

Korea University decided to use the money received from the selling of the apartment to establish a scholarship fund, the Jae-seok Choi Scholarship, for students in the College of Liberal Arts, where the late Choi served as a professor. In addition, in the hope of cherishing their meaningful contributions for many years to come, it was decided to name a classroom after Professor Jae-seok Choi and Mrs. Choon-gye Lee.

Professor Choi accomplished many great achievements in the fields of the history of Korean sociology and the history of ancient Korea-Japan relations. Against the colonial view of history, he persistently proved the fictiveness of Imna Ilbonbuseol, a claim that ancient Japan ruled the southern part of ancient Korea, through the publishing of more than 100 papers and books.
