KU celebrates KU Alumni Night its 112th Anniversary
The Proud Alumni Award was awarded to In-Seob Kim, Simon S. Lee, and Kyung-Ah Park, and the Crimson Award to Oh-Seob Kwon, Kyung-Bae Seo, Choon-Kye Lee, and Cheon-Gu Huh.

On May 2, Korea University and the Korea University Alumni Association celebrated the university’s 112th anniversary and the Day of KUians at Inchon Memorial Hall on the Anam Campus.

The Proud Alumni Award, the Crimson Award, the KU Pride Club Award, the Social Service Award, the Achievement Award, the Seoktap Outstanding Lecture Award, the Employee Achievement Award, the KU Family Award, the Long-term Service Award, and the Role Model Award were given to the recipients by Korea University at the anniversary ceremony.

The Proud Alumni Award was presented to In-Seob Kim (’55, Public Administration), an honorary lawyer of BLK; Simon S. Lee (’69, Industrial Engineering), chairman and CEO of STG; and Kyung-Ah Park (‘68, Medicine), Emeritus Professor of Medicine at Yonsei University.

After graduating from the Department of Public Administration in 1961, In-Seob Kim began as a judge in the Seoul Central District Court and served as a research judge for the Supreme Court and a presiding judge for the Seoul Civil District Court. In 1980, he established BKL (Bae, Kim & Lee), a law firm that adopted an advanced approach to law practice and provided an exemplary model for Korean law firm management. In 2000, he founded the Dongcheon Foundation in order to cultivate and support public organization activists and public-interest lawyers, conduct research on public-interest law, and provide legal aid and legislative research services, thereby contributing greatly to the protection of minorities and the disadvantaged.

Simon S. Lee, chairman and CEO of STG, graduated from the Department of Industrial Engineering in 1973 and began his career at Tongyang Broadcasting Company (TBC). In 1979, he started working in the U.S. as a consultant to several U.S. government agencies, including the General Accounting Office, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Education. In 1986, Lee established STG, a security/computing/data management and integrated IT solutions provider to 26 U.S. federal government agencies, including the State Department. He received several awards and honors, such as the Lifetime Achievement Award given by the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Small Business Person of the Year Award, and the Pan-Asian American Excellence Award. He also became the first Korean recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award given by the George Washington Alumni Association (GWAA). In 2010, Lee donated $2 million to George Washington University in order to support an academic collaboration program between Korea University and George Washington University.

Kyung-Ah Park, Emeritus Professor of Medicine at Yonsei University, graduated from KU’s College of Medicine in 1974 and became an anatomy professor at Yonsei University in 1979. She was the youngest person, the first female professor, and the first non-Yonsei alumni to receive the Professor of the Year Award by Yonsei University. In 2013, Park, who was appointed the president of the Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA), displayed excellent leadership and expertise in addressing common challenges faced by female doctors across the world. In 2011, she initiated a large-scale medical service program for underdeveloped countries by establishing an overseas volunteers group in the Korean Medical Women’s Association.

The Crimson Award, which recognizes the achievements of those who have consistently contributed to Korea University’s development, went to Oh-Seob Kwon (’78, Geology), president of L&P Cosmetic; Kyung-Bae Seo, president and CEO of Amore Pacific; Choon-Kye Lee, honorary professor at Dongguk University; and Cheon-Gu Huh (’59, Commercial Science), president of KOSAC.

The KU Pride Club Award is a newly established award created to recognize organizations and individuals that have contributed to the spread of the culture of small and regular donations and committed to the development of the KU Pride Club. This year’s recipients are Woo-Seung Lee (’76, Public Administration), who encouraged 161 people to engage in donation activities, and the Alumni Class of 1976 (the year signifies their university admission year), which boasts the largest number of members among all classes.

The top 5% of professors (146 professors who taught 157 courses) in the course evaluations conducted by KU students at the end of the fall semester of 2016 received the Seoktap Outstanding Lecture Award. Researchers who contributed greatly in technology transfer were awarded the Seoktap Technology Award, and the top 3% faculty members in terms of research achievements received the Research Award.

Jae Ho Kim, the Chief Director of the Korea University Foundation, said, “Many of our alumni have been playing a critical role in critical moments of Korea’s history—from Japanese colonial rule and restoration of independence to industrialization and democratization. Many of our alumni are serving as excellent leaders in every corner of the country. In today’s political and social turmoil, our alumni should think based on universally valid facts to offer their wisdom, and should show our country the way forward. And Korea University should nurture creative talents who can meet the needs of the era of the fourth industrial revolution. In order to do so, we should all change for the better, and the Korea University Foundation will spare no effort and support for the development of Korea University.”

Jaeho Yeom, the president of Korea University, stated, “Throughout history, universities have been serving as the leaders of social transformation and future changes. Founded on the basis of the Korean people’s aspirations and pride, Korea University has fought against Japanese colonial occupiers, has protested against dictatorial governments by leading the April 18 Student Movement and the April 19 Revolution, and has been at the forefront of the fight against military regimes during the June Democracy Movement. It also produced numerous experts in many fields. Korea University continues to take a leading role in fostering social transformation in the face of fourth industrial revolution.” He added, “Celebrating its 112th Foundation Anniversary, Korea University has greater aspirations for the coming years. KU will focus not only in education and research, but also in academic-industrial cooperation and social contribution. If our faculty members are complacent about the university’s achievements, it cannot go further. If our faculty members do their best in their part, our university can be guaranteed a bright future.”

Hak-Su Lee, the president of the Korea University Alumni Association said, “The first graduates of the Bosung College (the predecessor of Korea University) in 1907 were the country’s first modern intellects who received modern education. Korea University graduates have been following in their footsteps, playing a critical role in every moment of Korea’s history. I’m very proud of them, and I have no doubt that the future graduates of Korea University will serve as the leaders who will pave the way to a brighter future for the country.” He also said, “This year marks the alumni association’s 110th anniversary. We’ll renew our commitment to the development of Korea University.”
