Korea University established guidelines for generative artificial intelligence for the first time in Korea, and students' interest in ChatGPT has intensified.

* Generative artificial intelligence: Artificial intelligence that creates new content by learning given content, for example, ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion.

The Korea University Human Inspired AI Computing Research Center invited five field experts to hold a forum called Smart College Life with ChatGPT at the Choi Jong-hyeon Hall of SK Future Hall, Korea University, on April 12.

The event was attended by five field experts, Korea University professors who served as panelists: Professor Lim Heui-seok (Department of Computer Science and Engineering), a world-renowned scholar in natural language processing; Professor Choi June-seek (School of Psychology), the world's first robot psychologist; Professor Shin Eun-kyong (Department of Sociology), creator of AI-based sociomarkers; Professor Nam Ho-sung (Department of English Language and Literature), author of the bestseller Reading Mathematics; and Professor Song Sang-houn (Department of Linguistics), a next-generation human artificial intelligence communicator

Even before the event started, the event hall was packed with students. About 150 attended, displaying the high interest in generative artificial intelligence (AI) such as ChatGPT.

In Part 1, Chat GPT, Who Are You?, Professor Lim presented a lecture on how ChatGPT works, followed by a discussion with the panelists. The panelists shared their opinions on whether Chat GPT is a tool for plagiarism or one that expands an individual’s creative abilities, explaining the theory that one can only learn as much as one asks. They then expressed in-depth opinions on nurturing students through teaching then to make good use of Chat GPT rather than just rely on it.

Part 2 continued with a panel discussion on How Will ChatGPT Change Our Lives?. Each professor had time to communicate with students on topics such as Money Talk, There is no gap, Will question-oriented education take off?, The beginning of chaos, and Wise college life with ChatGPT.

Previously in March, Korea University was the first domestic university to set a basic direction for using generative artificial intelligence, including ChatGPT, and announced guidelines for applying it in the classroom. Rather than preventing the spread of technology, the university’s intention is to rationally accept it and induce active and participatory learning using AI.

Lee Won-gyu, Provost and Executive Vice President of Korea University, who attended the event, said, “Rather than responding passively to advanced technology, it is more important to use it as a challenge and opportunity and find a way to utilize it in education.”

He further said, “ChatGPT needs to be viewed as a new educational tool for improving students' creativity. Accordingly, it is expected that the teaching-learning method and the role of teachers will be different in the future. Our expectation is that it will change from a simple knowledge messenger role to an aide and guide for learning and research.”
