All informational services for Korea University students—library seat reservation inquiries, career development-related notifications, academic calendars, search functions, personalized notifications, and shuttle bus location information, among others—will soon become accessible via mobile phone.

On October 26th, after a year of preparation with Hana Bank/Card, Korea University launched the beta version of the integrated app ‘Hoit' (虎IT), one of the core projects in the building of a smart campus. ‘Hoit’ is the result of combining various functions such as mobile student IDs and school facility reservation inquiries, which had been available on separate systems, in a single mobile app. Korea University now has an integrated service system through the combination of the mobile app ‘Hoit’, ‘Hojeon' (虎錢), a payment method exclusive to Korea University, and ‘Hopae,’ a blockchain-based mobile ID.

‘Hoit’ will include features such as a search function, reservation inquiry services for libraries and so on, a personalized notification service, a PUSH notification service for issues such as risk management, scheduling services for things like scholarship applications and other events on the academic calendar, a local store guide, event management services for seminars and academic events, and a shuttle bus information service.

Korea University has also launched 'Hojeon,' a payment method exclusive to Korea University, in cooperation with Hana Bank/Card. The prepaid electronic payment method only for Korea University can be used through ‘Hoit,’ and was developed in order to ensure win-win growth with the local economy.

Along with the ‘Hojeon’ app, the Hojeon prepaid card using Korea University’s mascots will also be launched soon. From the early stage of planning, KU students' broad opinions on the design and function of the card have been reflected in it through a student monitoring group and on the basis of a design contest.

‘Hojeon’ can be recharged through a previously opened Hana Bank account, and using the card, money can be remitted to other users. Through the Hana 1Q Pay function on ‘Hojeon,’ users can pay in various ways at various convenient facilities on campus as well as at stores around campus. ‘Hojeon’ also provides various other services exclusively to Korea University, including ‘Hoppang’ for splitting bills, ‘KU Donation’ for transferring money to Korea University’s donation account, and ‘Hojeon Point Conversion’ for converting the points of ‘Hojeon’ affiliates.

In May 2022, Korea University launched a service that allows KU students to access all buildings and rooms on campus and to use on-campus facilities using the blockchain-based mobile ID ‘Hopae.’ Thanks to this new service, both domestic students and short-term exchange students on programs of less than six months, as well as foreign students taking Korean language classes, can use mobile ID cards.

Hopae, Hoit, and Hojeon are Korea University's exclusive virtual service platforms that represent the tigers (Hopae) which are the mascots of Korea University, connect the tigers (Hoit), and allow the tigers to spend money to revitalize the local economy (Hojeon). This embodies a virtuous cycle of participation-experience-improvement, created through discussion among all KU community members including students and faculty, while Korea University puts ESG values into practice and promotes a participatory smart campus.

President Chung Jin Taek of Korea University said, “The 'Hojeon' service linked to the integrated mobile app was developed as a joint project by three institutions on the basis of the philosophy of productive coexistence with the local economy. It is a participatory smart campus project through which schools and businesses can prepare for the future together, which has great significance in terms of fulfilling Korea University's ESG responsibilities.

Lim Young-ho, vice president of Hana Bank's Retail Support Group, said, "We focused on making it easier for KU students to access financial services by providing customized services through Korea University's integrated app. We will continue to provide support to ensure that KU students can conveniently use financial services in a mobile-friendly environment on campus.”

Korea University signed a business agreement with Hana Bank in December 2021 as part of its push to establish a smart campus. Through the ‘Smart Campus Promotion Team’ launched in November 2020, Korea University is gradually building a participatory smart campus that fits the trend of the times and reflects the opinions of the university community. Korea University is also making efforts to establish a safe research environment using ICT/IoT technology and to implement a blockchain-based mobile ID for the first time in a domestic university.
