The opening ceremony of a new KU Student Counseling Center was held at 1:30 pm, on April 12, in room 307 of the KU Science Library. It was difficult for students in the Science and Engineering Campus to visit the existing KU Student Counseling Center located in the Central Plaza on the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus due to the distance between the two campuses. The construction of a new KU Student Counseling Center, which began upon requests from science and engineering students, was completed in February. The provision of this new counseling center is expected to resolve the inconvenience of science and engineering students having to walk all the way to the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus in order to visit the KU Student Counseling Center.

Vice President for Student Affairs Jaehak Lee said, “I think that the Student Counseling Center plays a crucial role in improving students’ satisfaction with their school lives. The use of private and group counseling services at the existing KU Student Counseling Center located in the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus is increasing each year and is expected to continue to increase in the future. In order to use the counseling services, students had to wait for a long time; in particular, they had to wait for about a month to use the group counseling service. The opening of a new KU Student Counseling Center is expected to improve the convenience for science and engineering students in terms of location and time. I hope that our student counseling environment will become even better in the future, so that all KU students can receive quality counseling services.”

Vice President for Student Affairs Lee’s speech was followed by the introduction of the new Student Counseling Center by Research Professor Na-hyun Yu. After describing the tasks of the KU Student Counseling Center for science and engineering students, Professor Yu said, “The biggest issue in using the existing KU Student Counseling Center located on the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus was the time constraint caused by the distance for those who tried to visit the center in between classes. We expect that the use of the new KU Student Counseling Center by science and engineering students will increase, which only accounted for about 25% of the existing KU Student Counseling Center use in the past.”

A counseling professor, a professional counselor, and five semi-professional counselors will be assigned to the KU Student Counseling Center for science and engineering students located in room 307 in the Science Library. There will be a lobby and three private counseling rooms where students can sign up and receive psychological tests.
