Chronology

About 3,000 students demonstrate against the dictatorial regime of the Liberal Party, triggering the April 19th Revolution.

Yoo Jin-oh is inaugurated as the 4th president.

The Science Hall is built on the site presently occupied by Woodang Hall.
The Institute of Public Affairs is founded.

The April 19th Revolution Monument is erected.

Korea University establishes its Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program.

The Department of Horticulture is established under the College of Agriculture (classes commence in April 1962).

The Academic Affairs Committee decides not to hold the 1961 Ko-Yon Games.

The position of Vice President is restored, and Lee Jong-woo is inaugurated as the 2nd Vice President.

The academic year begins on 1 March as per Article 151 of the Education Act.
The 300th issue of the Korea University Newspaper is published. To mark the occasion, Korea University establishes a cultural award system consisting of an academic award (two recipients) and an athletic award (one recipient).

The 1st Granite Tower Festival hosts at least 30 events over three days. The University Museum opens in a new building.

The Department of Pedagogy and Psychology is included within the Division of Liberal Arts, and is divided into the departments of Pedagogy and Psychology. The departments of Sociology, German Literature, and French Literature are established under the Division of Liberal Arts; the Department of Chemical Engineering is included in the Division of Science; the Department of Zootechnical Science is included in the College of Agriculture; and the Department of Statistics is included in the College of Political Science and Economics.

All colleges accommodate 4,760 students in total.

The Korean Institute for Translating Classics is renamed as Institute for Korean Studies.

Construction of a laboratory farm for the College of Agriculture begins in Deokso, Gyeonggi-do. Relocation of the Jongam-dong farm begins (completed in September 1976).

The General Meeting for Erecting the Tiger Statue is convened.

The Graduate School of Business is founded.

The College of Liberal Arts and Science is divided into the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Science and Engineering. The College of Science and Engineering is restructured into the Division of Science and the Division of Engineering, the latter of which includes the Department of Chemical Engineering, and creates two new departments: Civil Engineering and Architectural Engineering. Korea University’s student body numbers 5,080.

The building of the Aegineung Campus is completed for use by the Division of General Education and the Division of Engineering.

Thirteen students are detained for partaking in the June 3 Resistance Movement.

The Graduate School of Business opens daytime courses.

The Tiger Statue is unveiled.

Korea University and Yonsei University agree to host the annual Ko-Yon Games in the fourth week of September.
Korea University graduate Kim Sung-gon donates KRW 5 million to establish the Main Gate.

At least 2,500 students demonstrate against the Korea-Japan Conference.
The Academic Affairs Council decides to close the school until 24 April.

The 60th Anniversary ceremony is held.
The 60 Years of Korea University and The 60th Anniversary Dissertation Collection are published.

Thousands of students protest for 5 days, demanding that ratification of the Korea-Japan Agreement be nullified.
Around 150 military personnel invade the Anam Campus (25 August)
Korea University decides to close temporarily due to the protest (28-31 August)

The Ministry of Education orders Korea University to close due to the protest (6-20 September).

Lee Jong-woo is inaugurated as the 5th president.

The Ko-Yon Games resumes (22-23 October). Ice hockey is added to the Games to establish the current 5-match Ko-Yon Games.

The 60th graduation ceremony is held.

The Institute of Industrial Technology is founded.

The Mechanical Engineering Hall is built.

The Graduate School of Education is established, consisting of three majors with a total enrollment capacity of 180 students: Language Education (Korean Language Education Section and English Language Education Section), Social and Life Education (History Education Section, Geography Education Section, and General Social Education Section), and Mathematics Education.

The Department of Food Engineering is established in the College of Agriculture, and the Department of Industrial Management is established in the Division of Engineering of the College of Science and Engineering. As a result, the university’s total enrollment capacity rises to 5,480 students.

The University Library initiates book check-out service.

The nut pine tree is designated as the University Tree.

The Communication Building is built.
The Department of Electrical Engineering introduces Korea’s first microwave magnetic resonance apparatus.

The Division of Administrative Affairs and the Division of Farm Affairs are reorganized into the Division of General Affairs and the Division of Farm Administration, respectively.
Within the College of Science and Engineering, the Department of Geology is established in the Division of Science, and the Department of Electronic Engineering and the Department of Ceramic Engineering are established in the Division of Engineering.
In the College of Commerce, the Department of Commerce is renamed as the Department of Business Administration. In the College of Liberal Arts, the Departments of Korean Literature, English Literature, German Literature, and French Literature are renamed as the Departments of Korean Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, German Language and Literature, and French Language and Literature. As a result, the university’s total enrollment capacity expands to 6,240 students.
In addition to the existing divisions (General Affairs, Academic Affairs, and External Affairs), the Student Affairs Division, Public Relations Division, and Cheering Division are established as part of the Student Union executive committee.

The Hydraulic Engineering Hall is built.
Protests against the Amendment to the Constitution for Presidency for Three Consecutive Terms results in the temporary closing of Korea University (30 June – 3 July).

The Research Institute for Mass Communications is founded; Oh Joo-hwan is appointed as its first director.
