The International Summer Campus faces the era of 2,000 students
Students from all over the World to Come Together to Grow into Global Leaders
ISC’s largest scale ever, with more than 2,000 participating students from more than 300 schools in 32 countries
The largest scale International Summer Campus (ISC) in Korea has begun.
KU is holding the ISC for six weeks, starting on Tuesday, June 27, in which domestic and international university students and prospective students of overseas schools participate.
KU ISC, which is the largest scale of its kind in Korea, started in 2004, and participation has increased each year for the past 14 years. Last year, the number of participating students reached over 1,800 and this year, 2,000 students are participating, which is the largest scale ever.
In the 2017 International Summer Campus, 2,019 students from over 300 schools in 32 countries, including the USA, Singapore, Canada, Hong Kong, England, and Australia, are attending. Students began their 6-week program with the 2017 ISC Student Orientation held in Inchon Memorial Hall at 10 am on Tuesday, June 27.

The programs of the orientation proceeded in the following order: education on gender equality called “Gender Equality on Campus” hosted by the Center for Gender Equality, “International Health Care Center KU-Hospital” and “Crime Prevention: Seongbuk Police Station” introducing the Korea University Hospital and Seongbuk Police Station for the convenience of international students, and a lecture on “Avoiding Plagiarism” to prevent any plagiarism. For the gender equality education specifically, professional counselor Jeong Min No of the KU Center for Gender Equality introduced the Center and some of the prevention and coping measures in dealing with gender discrimination and violence on campus.
In the following section of the ISC Student Orientation, the 6-week lectures being taught by the faculty from renowned universities around the world were introduced along with the “Cultural Immersion Program,” in which international students experience Korean culture. Students at the orientation showed great interest in Korean culture, especially in the “K-POP Dance Class,” which is a part of the cultural experience. In addition, an introduction to various facilities and programs followed, including the dormitory, where participating students will reside, the library, the language program, and the buddy program for interaction with KU students. After lunch, a cheering orientation for international students and campus tours with KU buddies were held.
KU ISC provides the highest-level lectures by inviting great scholars from domestic and international universities. Professors from the world’s most prestigious universities, such as Stanford, Cambridge, and Cornell, have come to lecture on over 120 courses including management, economy, politics, law, liberal arts, science, engineering, and art. Also, the “KU Pre-College” program for prospective students from overseas universities will be held. Prospective students will attend the same classes that university students take and have the advantage of experiencing the college life in advance.
Besides the lectures from professors of international universities, participating students will also have time to experience various aspects of Korean culture such as watching a baseball game, cooking Korean food, practicing taekwondo, learning calligraphy, and participating in a K-Pop dance flash mob, as well as opportunities to intern at large corporates, public enterprise, and government office. Also, KU has prepared buddy program so that KU students and international students can have the opportunity to interact with one another in order to learn international manners, and to help international students adjust to their unfamiliar environment quickly.
Sunhyuk Kim, the Vice President for International Affairs and the Dean of the International Summer Campus, emphasized that, “The biggest advantage of KU ISC is that students from various countries and schools of different regions are participating,” and that “students who come to Korea University to experience Korea will be able to learn about not just Korea, but also various countries. Such an advantage has led to high student satisfaction, breaking the record of the number of participating students each year.”
