Break the mold and build the future

Korea University is in the vanguard in the field of innovation in higher education, based on its focus on encouraging creativity. SK Future Hall, a future-oriented educational space, was recently completed after years of planning and construction. It is a manifestation of Korea University’s technological excellence in its drive to prepare for the future of higher education. Let’s take a closer look at the new building, which will serve as the starting point of KU's mission to innovate in 21st century higher education, and set a new standard for campus development.

Korea University adopted a fresh approach when planning and designing SK Future Hall, in order to construct a building that can foster students’ creative problem-solving skills and facilitate collaboration and communication among them. Courses to be offered in SK Future Hall will adopt the flipped classroom and tutorial-based approach (in which the conventional notion of classroom-based learning is inverted). In the flipped classroom, students research subjects before classes, and use classroom time to debate concepts and ideas and apply them to practical issues through interaction with peers and teachers in seminar rooms. The building also has plenty of carrels for individual self-directed study, each of which is about 3.3㎡ and is designed to help students concentrate on their studies. Equipped with 113 carrels and 106 labs and group study rooms, SK Future Hall will set a new standard for future campus design, and is expected to help create a culture of self-directed exploration and productive debate on campus.

Different concepts for each floor to create a dynamic, creative space

Inside the building, rooms of different shapes and sizes are arranged in irregular circular patterns. Each floor features a different color signifying a variety of meanings: the theme of the first basement floor is yellow, symbolizing hope and novelty; the first and second floors are in crimson, meaning the commitment of Korea University; the third floor is in green, representing growth and harmony; the fourth floor is in blue, signifying concentration and intelligence; and the fifth floor is in purple, meaning creativity and change.

A future-oriented campus with cutting-edge technologies

SK Future Hall integrates cutting-edge technologies that have not yet been adopted by any other university campus in Korea, including mobile passes which use a blockchain-based space sharing system; a smart environment where you can earn and use mileage with the help of massive datasets generated by building users; and study rooms you can book with your smartphone and enter by simply swiping your phone at the lock of a room. The more often you use the building, the more mileage you can earn, and this benefit is available not only to KU students but to local residents. Each classroom is equipped with temperature/humidity sensors to maintain a pleasant indoor environment as well as scream detection systems to ensure students’ safety, systems which were developed by SK Telecom. SK Future Hall is an ICT/IoT-based smart campus and a testing ground for new technologies.

In order to establish a smart campus, Korea University recently established the ICT/IoT Campus Committee and an open source-based data hub website. On the website, you can examine various data analysis results, such as course registration analysis and interdisciplinary major status analysis results. Korea University will soon start sending out newsletters containing key data analysis results to all KU students and faculty on the first day of each month. The first service to be launched, however, will be the study room rental service, because making use of empty spaces in the building was the item in highest demand according to a survey of all students and faculty on campus. The university will take the feedback of students and faculty into account as much as possible in the process of establishing a smart campus, and will expand all services across the campus in the next year.

SK Future Hall is located on the left side of Central Plaza. While Centennial Memorial Samsung Hall on the other side of the plaza was completed in 2005 to celebrate the university’s 100th anniversary, SK Future Hall symbolizes its vision for the next millennium. Hana Plaza connects SK Future Hall to the Auditorium, which is a symbol of KU’s history. The open plaza that connects the past and future of the campus is roofed in order to protect people from the weather, and this site is expected to serve as a center of campus community and events.
