Professor Lee Joonho in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of the Collage of Engineering awarded the Best Paper Award from Calphad, an academic organization publishing a renowned international academic journal of the same name.

The Calphad, an international academic organization on thermodynamics, announced last week at a conference held at the Hotel Grand Mercure in Singapore that Professor Lee Joonho’s group in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Korea University won the Best Paper Award for their article published in 2018 in the journal Calphad. The paper was entitled, ”Computer-aided alloy designs of grade 600 MPa reinforced steel bars for seismic safety based on thermodynamic and kinetic calculations: Overview” (Calphad, vol. 62, September 2018, pages 67-74).

Professor Lee is the general chief researcher of the research project for developing seismic reinforced concrete currently participated in by 13 institutions as a part of the Industry Core Technology Development Program of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Based on computer simulation and through the joint research program, he has rapidly developed a technology for commercializing 600 MPa seismic reinforced concrete. The authors of the paper included SHIM Jae-Hyeok, a senior researcher from KIST as the first author, Hwang Byoungchul, a professor from SEOULTECH as a coauthor, and Professor Lee Joonho from Korea University as the corresponding author.

The prize of 1,000 USD will be donated to the HopeBridge Korea Disaster Relief Association, a civilian relief organization, for restoration projects carried out in disaster-stricken areas.

In addition, Professor Lee received at a ceremony for the 20th Steel Day held on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 the presidential citation for his achievement in national development through the promotion of the steel industry.

Professor Lee has devoted himself to the development of steel products and to R&D of steel-making processes for past 16 years, conducting activities that foster human resources, improve systems and develop technologies for the steel industry. In particular, he received the presidential citation for his great contributions to Korea’s national development through the improvement of steel reinforcement standards and the commercialization of high-strength seismic steel reinforcement in connection with the demand for products in the relevant industries with the goal of improving the safety in people’s daily lives.

Moreover, Professor Lee has developed a program for fostering experts in the steel industry by creating a curriculum related to the steel industry and providing relevant education. In addition, working as a member of the Material Industry Skills Council, he has served as a communication channel to reflect the demands of business on university education. His creative contributions are also significant in increasing the competitiveness of the steel industry in the current era of sluggish economic growth, as he has identified problems in the domestic steel industry and provided methods for increasing global competitiveness of steel products.

As a scholar and an educator, Professor Lee continuously shared his knowledge and experiences through research papers and conference presentations. He has also contributed to policy-making activities in the steel industry by serving as a member of various committees, for example, a metallic materials expert committee member in the Industry Source Technology Road Map Committee for 2009, a metallic materials expert committee member in the Industry Convergence Source Technology Road Map Committee for 2010, and a metallic materials expert committee member in the Knowledge-Based Economy Convergence Technology Blue Print Committee for 2010.
