The KU-KIST Graduate School of Converging Science and Technology—led by Dean Seog-Woo Nam—established the Jung-il Jin Prize, and selected Professor Dong-Kwon Lim of the KU-KIST Graduate School as the first recipient of the prize.

Jung-il Jin, Emeritus Professor of Korea University and the founding Dean of the KU-KIST Graduate School founded in 2013, had contributed 100 million won to set up the Jung-il Jin Prize Fund in 2016, in order to recognize excellent faculty members and to promote academic development. After that, the KU-KIST Graduate School decided to select an outstanding faculty member every other year, starting from this year. The award comes with 10 million won of research funding.

Professor Lim, the first winner of the Jung-il Jin Prize, joined the faculty of the KU-KIST Graduate School in March 2015. He is credited with playing a leading role in nanochemical research, conducting a series of excellent research projects about the synthesis of nanoparticles in solution and application of this method to bio imaging and photocatalysis.

For three years, between 2015 and 2017, he published more than 20 papers in distinguished international journals, including Nano Letters (in 2015 and 2016), one of the world's top academic journals in the field of nanotechnology and applied sciences; ACS Nano (in 2015); NPG Asia Materials (in 2016); Biomaterials (in 2016); Theranostics (in 2017); and Nature Communications (in 2017), as a corresponding author or co-author. In the fields of bio imaging and photocatalysis, his research has opened up new possibilities for overcoming current technological limitations. In addition, he has been devoted to cultivating next-generation researchers: Graduate students, who are part of Professor Lim’s research team, won the bronze prize at the 22nd Samsung Humantech Thesis Prize; the Best Poster Award from the Korea Chemical Society; and the Best Poster Award at the 2016 Nano Korea. Moreover, he has been actively involved in popularizing science, giving talks in various events for the general public, including “The Science Touch Friday” and “The Saturday Science Lectures by Outstanding Researchers” initiated by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF).

The award ceremony was held on May 2, 2018 starting at 11:00 in Korea University’s R&D Center.
