Korea University Medical Center will open the Rosetta Hall Center at each affiliated hospital in order to implement a systematic and comprehensive approach to socially responsible activities. Through the Rosetta Hall Center, the KU Medical Center will transform its spirit of “nation and philanthropy” into actions and usher in a new chapter of sustained sharing that transcends activities and participation in social contribution.

KU Ansan Hospital will hold the opening ceremony of its Rosetta Hall Center, the first among the three, on October 5, with the aim of providing multicultural families with total support in health care, language translations, and career experience programs. The opening is significant in that the center will play an important role in the community as a systematic and general support center for multicultural families, the first of its kind in the medical community.

The Rosetta Hall Center will substantially improve the convenience of medical care for multicultural families with various programs, including the operation of the Rosetta Clinic with differentiated healthcare services, translation services, an exclusive reception desk, and a KUM-C bus that visits multicultural families with children with disabilities. In addition, it will implement practical and unique sharing activities, such as career experience programs for children, as well as bazaars and fundraising events for multicultural families.

The city of Ansan in Gyeonggi Province, where the KU Ansan Hospital is located, is home to 740,000 residents, including 75,000 registered foreigners. This means 10% of the residents are foreigners (as of July 2016). In particular, as a number of foreign and multicultural families in the city do not have access to healthcare services due to economic issues, the Rosetta Hall Center is expected to provide significant help for them.

The Rosetta Hall Center is named after Rosetta Sherwood Hall (1865-1951, Korean name: Heo Eul), who in 1928 founded the Joseon Women’s Medical Training Institute, the first of its kind for women in Korea, which later became the KU Medical School.

Rosetta Sherwood Hall devoted her life to the health care of Korean women, who were a vulnerable population during the Japanese colonial era. She visited Korea as a medical missionary at the end of the Joseon Dynasty and treated many Koreans. During this period, very few Koreans received medical care. In particular, she focused on treating women who could not receive proper treatment due to the Confucian ideas that women should not show their bodies to men. Hall also established the Joseon Women’s Medical Training Institute, leaving behind a great legacy in Korean medical history.

Following in the footsteps of Hall, the KU Medical Center plans to open and operate the Rosetta Hall Center in order to provide healthcare services for socially vulnerable populations and offer a new model of CSR activities as a partner for them. In addition, the KU Anam and Guro hospitals will open centers as well.

The opening ceremony of the KU Ansan Hospital’s Rosetta Hall Center was more meaningful with the presence of many distinguished guests. They included Yeom Jaeho, KU President Kim; Kim Hyo Myung, KU Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs; Cha Sang Hoon, President of KU Ansan Hospital; Je Jong-geel, Aansan City Mayor; Lee Hong-jae, Chief of the Ansan Danwon Health Center; and Moon Suk-hyon, Chief of the Ansansi Multicultural Family Support Center.

“KU has led historic changes in Korea at every juncture, including independence and democratization, under the founding philosophy—saving the nation through education. Such history led to the birth of the modification of KU, the true university of our country,” said KU President Yeom Jaeho.

“The KU Medical Center opened a hospital in the Guro Industrial Complex and then in the Banwal Industrial Complex, where residents could not conveniently access medical care during the industrialization era. These hospitals have offered healthcare services to the underprivileged, even treating wounds of our country,” said Kim Hyo Myung, the KU Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs. He added, “Opening the first Rosetta Hall Center in Ansan is quite significant as it is the first move towards a better future, passing down the legacy of Rosetta Hall.”
