KU Medical Center opens the Rosetta Hall Center, the first medical center to support multicultural families in Korea
The center is named after Rosetta Hall, the founder of the first women’s medical training institute in Korea

KU Ansan Hospital will hold the opening ceremony of its Rosetta Hall Center, the first among the three, on October 5, with the aim of providing multicultural families with total support in health care, language translations, and career experience programs. The opening is significant in that the center will play an important role in the community as a systematic and general support center for multicultural families, the first of its kind in the medical community.

The Rosetta Hall Center will substantially improve the convenience of medical care for multicultural families with various programs, including the operation of the Rosetta Clinic with differentiated healthcare services, translation services, an exclusive reception desk, and a KUM-C bus that visits multicultural families with children with disabilities. In addition, it will implement practical and unique sharing activities, such as career experience programs for children, as well as bazaars and fundraising events for multicultural families.

The Rosetta Hall Center is named after Rosetta Sherwood Hall (1865-1951, Korean name: Heo Eul), who in 1928 founded the Joseon Women’s Medical Training Institute, the first of its kind for women in Korea, which later became the KU Medical School.

Rosetta Sherwood Hall devoted her life to the health care of Korean women, who were a vulnerable population during the Japanese colonial era. She visited Korea as a medical missionary at the end of the Joseon Dynasty and treated many Koreans. During this period, very few Koreans received medical care. In particular, she focused on treating women who could not receive proper treatment due to the Confucian ideas that women should not show their bodies to men. Hall also established the Joseon Women’s Medical Training Institute, leaving behind a great legacy in Korean medical history.

The opening ceremony of the KU Ansan Hospital’s Rosetta Hall Center was more meaningful with the presence of many distinguished guests. They included Yeom Jaeho, KU President Kim; Kim Hyo Myung, KU Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs; Cha Sang Hoon, President of KU Ansan Hospital; Je Jong-geel, Aansan City Mayor; Lee Hong-jae, Chief of the Ansan Danwon Health Center; and Moon Suk-hyon, Chief of the Ansansi Multicultural Family Support Center.

“KU has led historic changes in Korea at every juncture, including independence and democratization, under the founding philosophy—saving the nation through education. Such history led to the birth of the modification of KU, the true university of our country,” said KU President Yeom Jaeho.
