Highly Cited Researchers from the Intellectual Property (IP) and Science business of Thomson Reuters, a global academic information service company, named Professor Jong Seung Kim of the Department of Chemistry in the College of Science as one of the most highly cited researchers in the world. The list identifies researchers with the top 1% most cited publications each year. Professor Kim has been included on the list for the past three years by Thomson Reuters.
Thomson Reuters is known for implementing its own Nobel Prize prediction system. Among the various possible indicators, they use the quantity of citations of a researcher’s work as one of the criterion. To compile the list of 3200 Highly Cited Researchers for 2016, the company analyzed 128,887 publications covering 21 different scientific fields from 2004 to 2014, quantifying the number of citations by authors.
The preliminary list of 3,200 Highly Cited Researchers identified using this methodology includes 28 Koreans. From the Korea University faculty, Professor Jong Seung Kim and former faculty member Anil Jain who was with Korea University’s Department of Brain and Cognitive Engineering until 2013 were named.
The Thomson Reuter’s Highly Cited Researchers 2016 will be officially announced once the selection process is complete at the end of this year.
The future research activities of Professor Kim look promising as he was also recognized as one of “The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds” released by Thomson Reuters in January.
