Professor Kyung-Mi Lee of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, College of Medicine was awarded the 12th Macrogen Woman Scientist Award.
Professor Lee developed a cell-based immunotherapy agent and transferred the technology to bio venture company NKMax. Cell immunotherapy is in the spotlight these days as it is regarded as a next-generation anti-cancer treatment. She was awarded for her contributions to the development of Korea’s cell therapy technology and for publishing her scientific paper on the technology in Cancer Research, a global academic journal.
The new treatment technology is said to be both more affordable and more effective, even on incurable solid tumors, which were difficult to treat using existing agents.
The award ceremony took place at the 2016 Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology International Conference held on May 19th at COEX. Professor Lee was awarded a plaque and prize money of 5 million won.
The Macrogen Woman Scientist Award was established by Macrogen in 2005 to recognize and support woman scientists working in the field of biotechnology.
