Korea University ranked 13th in the Social Sciences & Management area and 14th in the Arts & Humanities area, outperforming other major private universities in Korea.

According to the ranking of Asia universities by subject released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the British agency that rates universities around the world, Korea University took the top place among private schools in Korea.

One of the nation’s major news outlets, Chosun Ilbo, reported on June 16 that Korea University stood on the top of the list among private schools in Korea by ranking 13th in the Social Sciences & Management area and 14th in the Arts & Humanities area among the 517 top universities in Asia.

Many of the university’s colleges, including the College of Political Science & Economics, the College of Liberal Arts (Department of Sociology), the College of Education, Division of International Studies, School of Media & Communication, KU Business School, and the KU School of Law, that placed in the top 100 in the last round of ratings (the QS World University Ranking 2015-2016) reaffirmed their high levels in this year’s rankings.

In the Arts & Humanities area, not only those traditionally-reputable colleges such as the College of Liberal Arts and the College of Engineering (Department of Architecture) received a high rank, but a recently-recognized department, the School of Art & Design, was also awarded a high position on the list.

Thanks to the above-mentioned colleges and schools, Korea University was able to rank high among the universities in Asia.

In the Engineering & Technology area, KU ranked 40th among Asian universities, but 1st among Korean private universities.

The university maintained its previous position in the Asian list; 28th and 29th in the Life Science & Medicine area and in the Natural Sciences area, respectively.

In the Engineering & Technology area, Korea University won first place on the domestic list and ranked 40th on the Asian list. KU’s College of Engineering and College of Informatics, which have grown steadily based on their solid foundation, played significant roles in achieving the high ranking. It is rewarding that the colleges’ educational progress is being recognized domestically and internationally.

In the Life Science & Medicine area, KU maintained its position from the last ranking, remaining 28th on the list for three years running. Colleges that are subject to this area are the College of Life Sciences & Biotechnology, the College of Medicine, the College of Nursing, the College of Pharmacy, and the College of Liberal Arts (Department of Psychology). These colleges have displayed their attributes in setting a new standard and looking ahead to a better future.

While most of other universities in Korea saw their rankings fall compared to the previous year in the Natural Sciences area, Korea University managed to keep its previous position of 29th on the list. The College of Science and the College of Education (Department of Geography Education) are subject to this area. These colleges have been highlighted in recent years since they can collaborate with a range of other areas, including engineering, medicine, and IT.

The QS ranking is in line with other university ratings in which KU has witnessed a steady climb in its ranking. This confirms that the university is truly a world-class school equipped with highly-respected colleges and departments.

In the meantime, the university achieved a high ranking in 23 of the 42 subjects on the QS World University Ranking by Subject released earlier this year. On a global scale, KU ranked in the top 100, while it took first place among Korea’s private schools. From 2012 to 2016, the university has continuously added to its entries, which has reflected its success in achieving a balanced development between humanities and natural sciences.
