KU sees continued progress in its global ranking
The university ranked 90th in the QS World University Rankings 2018,

outperforming other private universities in Korea.
This year’s ranking on the global universities list is an all-time high.

According to the QS World University Rankings 2018, released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the UK agency that rates universities around the world, Korea University ranked 90th on the global universities list and topped the list of private universities in Korea – the highest rank in its history. Last year, the university ranked within the top 100, a first for domestic private schools, allowing it to achieve its mission statement of entering the top 100 world rankings that it declared back in 2005. In a year-on-year comparison, the university ranked eight places higher, displaying its elevated status on the global stage.

Korea University had already had a great showing in the QS World University Ranking by Subject 2017 released earlier this year. The university placed eight out of a total of 46 specific subjects in the top 50, outperforming other private universities in Korea. It can be assumed that this notable achievement was one of the grounds for the university’s high ranking on the global universities list.

Compared to five years ago, the university accomplished a remarkable feat of elevating its position 55 places higher. It was also noteworthy that the university has succeeded in achieving a balanced development in all academic, research, and international metrics.

The rating agency evaluated the performances of approximately 4,000 universities in the world according to the six metrics. In terms of the “Academic Reputation” metric, Korea University ranked 90th, positioning itself as a university recognized by the global academia. The university took 66th place in regards to the “Employer Reputation” metric that was based on the survey responses from employers. This proved that KU graduates have shown outstanding performances in their social career and that the university’s effort to nurture pioneering intellectuals has come to fruition.

The other metrics included the Faculty/Student Ratio, Citations per Faculty, International Faculty Ratio, and International Student Ratio.

KU was also recognized for its excellence in the education, research, and reputation areas, taking first place among domestic private universities in Academic Ranking of World Universities 2016 released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the QS University Rankings: Asia 2016 last year.

KU Vice President for Planning and Budget Jae-Wook Kim commented on the result. “The climb is the result of our continuous effort to improve the university’s academic and research capabilities. It also testifies that the university has been on the right track to become a globally competitive university,” said Kim.
