On Thursday February 25, 2021, Korea University celebrated its 114th graduation ceremony at the school’s Inchon Memorial Hall. A total of 6,361 KU students—4,280 undergraduates and 1,700 postgraduates—received their degrees.

Kim Jae-ho, Chairman of the Korea University Foundation, said in his congratulatory remarks, “It is unfortunate that the graduation ceremony cannot be held in person due to the pandemic.” Addressing the graduating students, Kim added, “In this time of hardship, keep in mind the indomitable spirit of Korea University that has overcome many challenges throughout the country’s history. The path Korea University has taken will give you inspiration for years to come.” He continued, “I hope that your dreams and passion become a valuable foundation for creating a better world and a brighter future.”

Chung Jin Taek, President of Korea University, said, “I believe that you have challenged yourselves, identified your true values, and found yourselves anew at Korea University. Now you will leave the campus and begin your voyage into a world that is riddled with uncertainties.” President Chung stressed that the rapidly changing social environment presents both perils and opportunities. He remarked, “Even in the age of Artificial Intelligence, new technologies are being developed and operated by humans. Strive to become leaders imbued with creativity, a spirit of entrepreneurship, and a human-oriented vision of the future, rather than someone who is fixated on received wisdom.” He advised the students to pursue a life in which they contribute to society, the country, and the world with empathy and an open heart and mind.

Koo Ja-yeol, President of the KU Alumni Association, opened his congratulatory address by saying, “Congratulations to all of the proud graduates who are stepping out into the world to start their professional careers.” He went on to say, “On behalf of KU's 350,000 alumni, I warmly welcome you to the Alumni Association. The KU alumni you will meet throughout your career will give you a lot of help, both personal and professional.” He also added, “I believe that you will overcome challenges and achieve your dreams through the passionate hearts that beat within KU alumni.”

The graduate student representative’s speech was delivered by Park Ji-yeon (’15, Department of German Language and Literature). She commenced by saying, “Korea University has given me a lot of memorable and happy moments. My university friends have been an important part of my campus life, as they have taught me the value of people and relationships.” Park went on to say, “Our professors have taught us to pursue truth and to seek justice and liberty for all people. What we have learned at Korea University will always lead us to the right path, and having been so blessed, I also want to have a positive influence on others.”

The usual practice of singing the school song in unison was replaced by those involved watching a video of the Korea University Choir, which was accompanied by the remote singing of KU students. The entire graduation ceremony was live-streamed on YouTube due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
