This winter, the KU International Winter Campus (IWC) offered ice-skating lessons to students on the KU campus ice rink.

The six-week course, which started on December 28th, consisted of two three-week sessions provided opportunities for students to learn and explore Korean culture with Korean 'buddies' as well as to take various academic lectures. And being a part of the ice-skating program allowed foreign students to experience the pleasures of a Korean winter.

Around fifty students who participated in the course were divided into two groups according to their ice-skating experience. Students were free to practice their skating skills, a period which was followed by an hour-long lesson offered by professional instructors. Most students initially seemed somewhat tentative as they were holding onto the wall; however, after together taking small steps one at a time and learning how to retain their balance on ice, they quickly managed to adjust their body positions and begin skating.

Kang Su-lin, one of the administrative staff of the IWC, said, “Unlike the International Summer Campus, the IWC has many foreign students from Australia and Southeast Asia, so we set up this program to offer them the chance to experience a Korean winter. I hope that students come away with good memories by participating in the various programs that we are offering.”

Yuxuan Liew from Queensland University, Australia said, “I had barely skated before, but with the instructors’ assistance, I was able to learn how to skate in a short time. It was a great opportunity to experience what university life is like in Korea.”

Other than ice-skating, the KU IWC plans to offer new experiences to students by enabling them to take part in various cultural programs such as preparing Korean cuisine, playing basketball, skiing, and learning calligraphy.
