According to the 2016 World University Rankings conducted by Quacquarelli Symonds (hereafter QS), a British university evaluation institution, Korea University (hereafter KU) ranked 98th in the world, its highest ranking ever. For the first since KU began being evaluated by the QS World University Rankings in 2004, the school was able to break into the Top 100, making it the first private university in Korea to do so. This year’s QS World University Rankings assessed more than 4,300 institutions worldwide in four different areas (research, education, alumni, and internationalization) based on six key performance indicators. Among the indicators, the Academic Reputation from Global Survey’ section made up 40% of the overall assessment. A total of 74,651 world academics participated in the assessment survey.
The First Private University in Korea to Enter the Top 100

KU was ranked 188 in the Shanghai Ranking. Major factors behind the climb were high performance indices regarding the number of highly-cited researchers (+5.8) and the number of articles published in SCIE/SSCI journals (+1.5).

The rating agency assessed the performances of 517 universities from 17 Asian countries including Korea, China, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong. Among the nine criteria of performance assessment, KU demonstrated a sharp improvement in the following three areas: citations per paper (8 places higher than the last survey), faculty/student ratio (8 places higher), and proportion of international faculty (7 places higher).

KU ranked among the top 100 universities around the world in 23 of 42 subject areas, the highest among Korean private universities. In particular, KU ranked 31th in Social Policy & Administration , 33th in Modern Language.
